Enugu Rangers General manager, Davidson Owumi, says the non commencement of the Nigeria Professional Football League season is a responsibility of the League Management Company (LMC) as the controlling body in the country, to come up with a proper decision on when the league will kick off.

The Delta-born astute football administrator made his position known in a chat with Sports Arena on Tuesday.

“The way it is, Rangers is just one team among nineteen teams and there’s a body that organizes the league”. “It’s their responsibility to tell us when they will kick start the league. For now, we have not been officially communicated as to when the league will kick off”.

“So, I have little or nothing to say about that other than to keep on getting prepared so that whenever they announce we will take it up from there”.

Speaking on his team’s preparation for the season, Owumi disclosed that they have been pre-occupied with getting the players ready psychologically and otherwise ahead of the league’s commencement.

“When you come out from off season, there are basic things you need to subject the team (players) to, like fitness, training, getting them to be psychologically okay, and getting one or two players to beef up the team.”

“These are all part of the preparations and now they are in final stage of the preparations, and that is getting the team together to play some friendly matches. These are all we are doing to get prepared for the D-day”.

He also expressed his thoughts on the elimination and qualification of Nigerian club sides in this year’s CAF Champions League and CAF Confederations Cup competitions.

“I wouldn’t know exactly what transpired in their own circumstances because in the past two seasons when we played in the continent, there was no league in place when we started our own competition”.

“And that did not in any way affect our play because we got into the group stages on two occasions”.

“So, I think that for a team that is aware of their continental engagements, non commencement of the league will not be a serious excuse, but, although, to some extent you can say yes, match fitness and things like that. But, we all knew that these competitions will take place as at the time they did”.

“In as much as I will agree to some extent that yes it did, but, Enyimba did not play any league match but they qualified. I think that there are other issues that might be responsible”.

Meanwhile, on the financial situation of clubsides who have been exposed to more expenses incurred as a result of their preparation for the league season that has been faced with uncertainties, Owumi commended Enugu state Government for the continuous support and encouragement shown towards Ranger’s welfare.

“I have to first of all give kudos to the Enugu state governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, for giving us the priviledge and the wherewithal to have sustained the team for this past eight months”.

“Within this eight months, salaries have been paid, bonuses paid and it’s not easy when there is no league, no competition but government taking the bills”.

“It’s not been very easy and I think that it will be proper that they commence the league on time so that the financiers of these clubs will atleast have something to show for the money being spent”, concluded Owumi.
