Edo State Deputy Governor and 2020 National Sports Festival’s Local Organising Committee (LOC), Philip Shaibu,  has proposed a new date for the event to hold in March or April 2021, describing the  new date of January 3-17 announced by the Ministry of Youths and Sports Development two weeks ago as ‘insensitive’.

In a chat with sports journalists penultimate week, Shaibu said the January date which was the choice of the  Presidential Task Force (PTF) on Covid-19 is far from being realistic because of it lacked  proper consultations with the National Council for Sports and the host state .

Also, Shaibu said holding the festival in January will amount to not having adequate preparations by states and athletes because of the New Year celebrations.

“Looking forward to when the multi-sports event will take place, I think the National Council of Sports will have to meet to deliberate on the date set by the PTF and then agree on a possible or acceptable date”.

“By so doing, I believe that woulc lead to an adjustment in the date which probably may fall within March or April”.

Before now, the National Sports Festival had been scheduled to take place in March, but, was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, it was rescheduled to hold in December before suffering another postponement for the same reason.
