The opening Day 1 fixture between Rivers United and Rangers International in the new Nigeria Professional Football League season has been moved to Wednesday, December 30.
The Permanent Secretary in the Rivers State Ministry of Sports and President of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, Honour Sirawoo, gave the hint in a chat with Sports Arena on Saturday.
Sirawoo, disclosed that the reason behind the shift of the match which was earlier scheduled to hold on Sunday, December 27, is to give the Garden City side the time to rest after their trip to South Africa where they defeated Bloemfontein Celtics 2-0 in one of the CAF Confederations Cup matches decided in the week.
“We wrote to ask for a shift in the opening match with Rangers to Wednesday, so that United will have time to rest and prepare after the hectic period they went through during their trip to South Africa”.
“All things being equal, the team will be ready to face Rangers in midweek”, Sirawoo said.
Meanwhile, the players and officials of Rangers were expected to travel to Port Harcourt for the game on Saturday before this latest development.
