Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) President, Honour Sirawoo, has said the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has no powers or authority to carry out the affairs of conducting elections for the body.
In a chat with Sports Arena, Sirawoo disclosed that SWAN is an autonomous body registered under the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA).
He added that the body whose responsibility it is to conduct or supervise election for SWAN is SWANECO, while NUJ elections are conducted by Credentials Committee.
In his words, Sirawoo said: “Which law in Nigeria states that for you to practice Sports journalism you will have to join NUJ?
He emphasised that SWAN is not in any way under NUJ and as such will not have anything to do with them because SWAN is a professional body that is independent.
Sirawoo, while explaining further said, “SWAN is affiliated and guided by the rules of AIPS and pays affiliation fees, therefore we are not under any obligation with NUJ”, he concluded.
