Super Falcons captain, Asisat Oshoala, has apologized to Nigerians following the woeful defeat against South Africa’s Bayana Bayana in the final match of the Aisha Buhari Invitational Tournament which ended in Lagos on Tuesday.
The FC Barcelona forward who disclosed this through her Facebook page on Wednesday evening expressed disappointment with the outcome of the game on behalf of her teammates.
Oshoala, who admitted that the team performed below expectation said, “Yesterdays defeat still hurts. I must confess it was a disappointment from all of us”.
“As the captain of the team, I’m indeed sorry because we did not fight hard enough”.
However, she added that the defeat was a wake-up for them to step up their responsibility in future engagements.
“This is a wake-up call and I promise we won’t let our fans and the nation down like this again.
The reigning African Women Player of The Year thanked the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), the Lagos State government and Nigeria’s First Lady, Aisha Buhari, for the support they gave the team and also helping to promote women football in Africa.
“On behalf of the team, I want to thank the organizers of the tournament, from the Mother of the Nation, H.E (Dr.) Aisha Buhari, H.E Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, H.E (Dr.) Mrs Sanwo-Olu, the NFF, Air Peace boss, AIETO, MTN, other corporate supporters and indeed the FANS of our football”. “Thank you for helping to promote Women’s Football in Africa”, said Oshoala.
The Super Falcons lost to Banyana Bayana by 4-2 to leave Nigerian football fans who came out in large numbers to cheer the team in disbelief.
