Bayelsa state government has accused the president of Moni Michelle Construction Company, Ebi Egbe, of sponsoring the latest media attacks against the state, ahead of Bayelsa United’s CAF Confederation Cup home match against CS Sfaxien, Sportsyarn.online, can exclusively report.
Bayelsa state Commissioner for Sports, Daniel Igali, made this known in a telephone chat with the online tabloid on Friday, while reacting to media reports relating to the latest ban placed on the Samson Siasia Stadium after the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) technical report suggested that the venue is not fit to host continental games because of the poor playing pitch.
The Olympic Gold medalist and Nigeria Wrestling Federation president said, “As I speak to you now, a CAF official is in the state to assess the situation on ground, and I have not received any letter informing the state of such decision by CAF”.
“All the media reports on this issue are lies being sponsored by Moni Michelle to distract us, and I promise we will not fall into his trap”.
“This is a man who collected over N1.5Billion from the state government to re-construct the Samson Siasia Stadium”. “I can’t believe people can be so deceptive in their actions. Come to think of it, the same stadium being talked about hosted a continental game few weeks ago and was applauded. So, why this latest media antagonism?
Igali added, “At this point, we can not be intimidated by anyone because we will not be distracted by their attacks or whatsoever. We are focused and will not be deterred in any way”.
“I just hope that journalists will find it important to carry out checks before publishing a report because I’m surprised to see such, which to me is a way or plan to deny Nigeria and a Nigerian club from progressing in an important competition of this kind”.
In addition, Igali says he plans to call a media conference today (Friday) to explain what has happened and what is happening to the world.
“Let me quickly tell you that after this chat with you, I’m going to call an emergency media conference to speak on this issue. I think it’s time to tell the world what has transpired”.
“But, let me assure our fans and supporters that we will not falter because we are prepared to do all we can to make them happy as our preparation remains intact. We will not be deterred or intimidated into making mistakes”, said Igali.
Meanwhile, Bayelsa United had defeated their Guinean opponents, Ashanti Gold Boys 4-2 in their opening match of Africa’s second tier club competition.
