The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has approved the use of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The approval was made known in a letter sent to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and dated May 1, 2022.

This development followed FIFA’s decision to sanction Nigeria on Monday, in reaction to fans invasion of the Abuja Stadium during a World Cup Play-off against Ghana on March 29.

FIFA had ruled that the AFCON 2023 qualifier involving Nigeria and Sierra Leone at the Abuja stadium, scheduled for next month, would be played behind closed doors. The world governing body also imposed a fine of $150,000 (N64m) on Nigeria.

Meanwhile, CAF’s approval of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium has ended speculations about plans being conceived to bar the facility from hosting international matches.
